CWSA Increase Water Rates in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Come February 2012 Vincentians will begin to pay $5.00 EC more for water and solid waste management services. In a press conference earlier this week Garth Saunders(CEO) said that 75% of consumers will see an increase of EC$10 or less for water supply and sewerage services.
Mr Saunders said that 75% of the CWSA consumers will see an increase in their bills of between EC$5 and EC$10 per month. The basic charges has increased from $12.00 EC to $14.00.
Business places will seen an increases from $15.00 EC to $25.00 EC
According Garth, these basic charges is to ensure that the CWSA has a sufficient fixed income to be able to carry out their basic services.
There is also an increase in the Domestic and Commercial Sewerage rates and Garbage disposal services
On mainland St. Vincent, the environmental fee will be $11.00 EC up from $8.00.
In the Grenadines, the garbage is collected twice a week and their domestic environmental fee will be $10.00 EC, the previous rate was $5.00 EC.

My Take
So after listening to Mr Saunders detailed reasons for the increase of the CWSA rates, I must say that the increase is not at all burdensome, it is not outrageous, or unreasonable. I believe that if persons analize the figures, they would realize that the increase is barely minimal. Persons may just have to prioritize. It will take some behavioral adjustments, for example, taking shorter baths, I mean why would you have the water from the shower head running continously when you are soaping up your rash rag, how about ,using buckets to wash down vehicles, fixing leaks ASAP and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
On the other hand this increase will cause consumers to be more conservative when using their water.
